Despite the fact that Switzerland’s glaciers are beating the climate change, the country still boasts some of the most spectacular ice blocks in the European continent. Chief among these gigantic forces of nature is the Great Aletsch Glacier which stretches for twenty-six kilometers, making it the biggest glacier in Europe.
There are many thermal baths in Switzerland that you will be too overwhelmed to choose which one to visit. Montreux’s winter market steals the show as the Chateau Chillon joins the festivities. This is a winter wonderland that both kids and adults will love. Winter is the traditional time to eat delicious fondue. You can be sure that nothing thaws out the cold like molten cheese. This is usually found across the entire country, but the best place to try it is in the medieval town of Gruyeres.
If you do not like skiing, there are plenty of other things to do in the snow during the wintertime. Go to the ice fields with snow-shoes, go for a spot of night sledding or show off your ice skating skills. One of the best places to do these activities is Interlaken. This is the self-proclaimed adrenaline capital of Switzerland.
The summer season may have the largest festivals in Switzerland, but the winter season comes with their own great events as well. One of the biggest festivals is the relatively new Polaris Festival in Verbier where the main stage sits right on the ski slopes blaring out techno music until the early hours. Others festivals include White Turf, which brings together art, horse racing and music at St. Moritz. The International Balloon Festival at Château-d’Oex is an altogether more calm affair when the sky is dotted with hundreds of hot air balloons.
