Munich and Neuschwanstein Castle
Our October vacation on AMA Waterways’ Danube River cruise concluded with a 3 day stay in Munich, Germany.
Munich is more than Oktoberfest. The city has great museums, shopping, historical sites, a beautiful surrounding countryside, and yes, beer. We sampled the local brew at Augustinerbrau, a top-rated beer hall on Trip Advisor and of course the famous Hofbrau House.
We toured Nymphenburg Palace, the Marienplatz (center of social activity and meeting place for all tourists in Munich), great old churches and back to present day at a tour of BMW World.
Most of the next day was spent in transit to and touring Neuschwanstein Castle. As the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle, I have always wanted to see it. The coach dropped us at the foot of the hill near the restaurant and gift shop. We chose to walk up, even though a horse and wagon option was available. We continued to the narrow bridge where my photo was quickly taken. Heights are not my favorite thing. Once inside, the climbing continued, throughout the tour. I found it to be very well worth the effort. The guides were very knowledgeable explaining the building and decorating of the castle. I felt like I was in a fairy tale with great views of autumn in Bavaria down below.
